Según dicen en su comunicado de prensa: "Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD-DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD-DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand."

Death to HD-DVD?

According to the latest news, Netflix, the movie renting giant, will stop renting movies in the HD-DVD format in favor of Sony's Blu-ray Disc. It's not surprising giving the fact that most Hollywood studios have leaned toward Blu-ray lately. Is this the last shovel of dirt of the HD-DVD grave, alongside Betamax? (By the way, I still think that HD-DVD is better...).

Microsoft zune-phone is coming.

Microsoft doesn't like to be number 2; in fact almost no body likes it. In the wake of the truly innovative Apple iPhone, this Monday, a announcement came out of Seattle. Microsoft have acquired Danger, the makers of the T-Mobile Sidekick platform. This makes us wonder if Microsoft is trying to make a comeback into the cellphone game. Is the market ready for the Zune-phone?

Newborns?

My Fake Baby: Living Doll is a TV show/documentary from the British Channel 4. What's interesting about it is that these women, some of then past their 50s, buy this doll so detailed that it looks like the real thing. creepy.

HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc?

A lot of people have been asking me lately: What's the difference between Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD? Most of the time I try to explain how they work and how it affects people, etc. For the last time (...yeah, right): Both offer 1080p video and high-end audio quality (Dolby digital, THX, 7.1, etc). If you don't own a High Definition TV, forget about it, you're going to waste that money on that type of player. At least you'll need a screen that can support 720p video (1080p been ideal) and at least a component connection (again, HDMI is the ideal). If you only have a old CRT TV, not even with a composite connection you are asking the wrong question. You need to ask if you need to upgrade your TV.
Anyways; the mayor difference, my opinion of course, is the storage capacity. The Blu-ray disc can hold 25GB per layer and the HD-dvd 15GB. Let say that both disk are dual-layer; then, the Blu-ray disc will hold 50GB and the HD-DVD disc 30GB. After that, is also good to know that the less expensive Blu-ray player on the market is the Sony PS3 and the less expensive HD-DVD player is the Xbox360 HD-DVD player add-on. For more details check this link out, and if you're not satisfied check this other link. In the meantime, NO MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS SUBJECT PLEASE.

The Solid State of Things

I don't know if you guys are aware of what's new in the data storage space. Expensive still, but great; the new computer models sporting solid state hard drives had made their appearance in the market. The new "disks", differently to the ones that we are used to see on our machines, are more or less flash memory banks like a "pen or thumb-drive"; but with more capacity and a higher read & write speed. A good example of what can be achieved in term of design with these new hard drives is the MacBook Air. Check out Apple and Sony models with SSDs.
