Got your new pc, now what?: Getting Rid of the Junk.

You been waiting, saving some money, and looking for the right one. Finally after a lot of trouble(maybe) you got it; a brand new PC (laptop or desktop). Now what? Well; if you brought yourself a new Mac you are pretty much set after installing Firefox. But if you're stuck with a Windows PC now the real work starts: getting rid of all the junk that comes with it.

Most PC vendors, in order to get a few bucks here and there or to create a false sense of value, preinstall a slew of programs in hope that you stick to some of them, that is part of the marketing game. This programs run from a silly CD/DVD burner program to trials of office productivity suites to antivirus software that work for 3 to 6 months the least and don't offer any more protection that a free counterpart, like MS Security Essentials or Avast. More often than not, these programs are totally unnecessary, and to a point, they can also be a burden to the user and to the system itself.

"No", can be an answer; in case you didn't know that!

I don't understand why people of certain age group or generation think they are entitle to stuff. I bet you are going to experience this, at least once in your lifetime. One big example  is when people ask for favors. Who in the world told then that when you ask something from somebody, as a favor; let say a friend, family member or some random person, you will always get a 'yes' to your desire?

I've been experiencing this all my life; when a was a kid and now, that I'm suppose to be an adult. There are these people that ask you to do something for then, just as a favor, and when you tell then that you cannot do it they go berserk.

 Like the time a "friend" of mine ask me to borrow my car so he can go on a 3.5 hour trip to "see" his then girlfriend. He tells me: Bro!, can I borrow your car for a quick trip to see my girlfriend? Please man, I'm dying to see her, etc. He didn't think that I may need my car during that time or that I can't lend it to him because if something happened my insurance won't cover it or even the fact that his driver license was expire and I knew that.

Lilliput Mini 7" USB Monitor

For quite some time, I've been looking for a second monitor to add to my system. The problem is that the graphics card that I have only has one video output and I can't, for the time being, add another card. Well, the solution for this dilemma is an USB based monitor. After searching the net for an inexpensive solution I came across the Lilliput Mini 7" USB Monitor.
This monitor requires no extra power; it takes all it needs from the 5 volts of your USB port; and its great for laptop use because of its really portable size. This monitor can function has a display for any document that you are working form, as well to display any application that doesn't need high resolutions (it only have a 800x480 resolution display & a contrast ratio of 400:1) like an instant messenger client, your twitter page or just if you want to use it as a digital picture frame. The best part is the price: it under $100 bucks in mayor online retailers.
ThinkGeek has it for $99.99+shipping; Amazon form $99.95+shipping and looking on eBay (something that I don't recommend) I found one for $115.95 with "free shipping" and another for a starting bid of $75.00 (it looked fake, though).

There's not such a thing as free internet people!

Al parecer, todavia hay gente que cree que existe algo cuyo precio es gratis, cero, nada. Un ejemplo de esto es lo que me pasó ayer. Esta persona, con una cara de semi-preocupación, me pregunta: ¿Tienes una cajita que te pueda comprar para poder cojer internet?

Yo la miro y me pregunto: ¿Que será lo que quiere; un router, un modem o quizas algún network adapter of some sort?  Termino preguntandole: ¿Un router?(insert explanation of a router here).

-No.

¿Un wireless adapter?(insert explanation of wireless adapter here).

-No.

 ¿Quizas un wireless network range extender?(insert explanation of that here).

-No, no. Quiero algo que le pueda ponerle a la computadora para "cojer" internet!

Microsoft wants its market back!

Today at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Microsoft made the announcement that we all where waiting for. The next installment of Windows OS for smartphones is going to be Windows Phone 7 Series. Going by the press conference and release, we can take for granted that the old GUI is over. It seems that the new GUI is based on the one found on the ZuneHD. Say good bye to that dump stylus (yeah!). Also, the new thing that Microsoft is trying, is the full experience integration between our three screens (TV, PC & phone). All that will be connected to the cloud, wired or wirelessly, with data redundancy for your three or more devices on that ecosystem. It is to be seen if this new OS iteration will be competitive in a market full of Palm, Nokia, Blackberry, Android and iPhone OS devices.

Apple Strikes Again: Say hello to my little iPad!

Apple lo ha hecho otra vez. Primero fue el iPod; despues el iPhone y ahora es el iPad. Todo comenzó con la famosa iMac; que marcó el regreso de Steve Jobs despues de un forzado retiro. Con idea de que los clientes no saben lo que quieren si no que papá Jobs decide qué es lo que queremos; ahora tenemos la versión del tablet pc que necesitamos. Con un procesador propietario de 1 Ghz y corriendo una nueva version del iPhone OS, el iPad viene para acabar con los Kindlesy netbooksof the world. Palabras son pocas para describir las posibilidades de este nuevo juguete; pero se puede decir que es compatible con todas las aplicaciones del iPhone y iPod Touch, su precio empieza desde $499 dólares y además, si se adquiere con conección de data 3G, el servicio ilimitado (AT&T in the US) solo costará $29.99 dólares mensuales sin contrato . No hay duda de que pronto veremos estas cosas por todos lados o por lo menos verás una en mis manos cuando salga a la venta en poco tiempo (cuando a la FCC le dé la santa gana de aprobarlo, jeje).

Los celulares ya no son seguros!!!

Es increíble como con el avance de la tecnología las compañías encargadas de brindarnos el servicio de telefonía a través de celulares no toman ninguna iniciativa por lograr tener unas redes más seguras, así también brindándonos más seguridad a nosotros sus clientes.

Desde 1988 se creó el código binario conocido como el A5/1, el cual está encargado de brindarle seguridad a los usuarios de celulares a nivel mundial. Para todos los que siguen el mundo tecnológico y de la informática solo pensar que ya prácticamente teniendo el 2010 a la vuelta de la esquina sabrán que esto de estar usando un código con 22 años de antigüedad para brindar seguridad es una práctica muy insegura. Las preguntas que vienen a la mente son: ¿Cómo es posible que estas compañías no actualicen sus códigos de seguridad con frecuencia? ¿Habrán intentado poder brindarnos más seguridad? ¿No tendrán un equipo de ingenieros capaces de crear e implementar nuevos códigos de seguridad?

Pues según este articulo del periódico elpais un ingeniero alemán en conjunto con otros 23 compañeros han logrado crackear el código demostrando así la vulnerabilidad de este código en estos días en los que la tecnología avanza cada día. Este ingeniero Karsten Nohl presento su logro en la conferencia Chaos Communication Congress, que es la conferencia más importante de los hackers europeos, la cual fue celebrada en Berlín. Este divulgo el código en la conferencia ante 600 personas, mejor dicho 600 hackers y también lo ha puesto por internet haciéndolo accesible a cualquier persona con servicio de internet y como es raro que las personas en estos días no cuente con servicio de internet pues ustedes sabrán lo difícil que se podrá hacer conseguir este código.

En el articulo sin embargo aunque se menciona que una persona con un sistema de no más de $1,500 dolares o en otras palabra una computadora con conexión a internet tiene ahora la posibilidad de hackear el sistema y así poder rastrear, escuchar y grabar las llamadas hechas por nosotros desde nuestros celulares. Estas son solo 3 posibilidades ya que según el celular tenga más opciones la persona tendrá más posibilidades de hacer cosas.

En contestación a esto el director de seguridad de la asociación GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), James Moran, no considera que la publicación del código vaya a provocar problemas y según él dijo para el periódico estos problemas no se verán "mañana, ni la semana o el mes que viene". Solo con esta palabras de él deja ver que es un completo inepto e incompetente y gracia a Dios yo no soy el jefe de él porque sino ya lo hubiera despedido. Al parecer el pobre hombre no tiene ni computadora ni internet en su casa o en su celular. Si con esto traigo que ya los celulares como bien sabemos cuentan con servicio de internet y no es difícil saber que si ya tienen el código para computadoras es posible crear una aplicación para nuestros celulares que nos permitan rastrear las llamadas de personas en especifico desde nuestros propios celulares creando así un completo caos e inseguridad total para nosotros los usuarios de este servicio de comunicación que hoy en día es indispensable. Solo queda ver que harán estas personas para resolver el problema, pero ya con las declaraciones que han dado es fácil saber que no podemos esperar mucho al respecto.

Old to new school: the cassette tape dilema.

Yeah, yeah, I know; I'm not that old, but some times it feels like it. The other day, I found some of my cassettes tapes filled with really good music that I haven't listen in a long while. The problem, as you may have predicted, is that I don't have a cassette player to listen to them. The last time that I had one was in 1997, if I'm not mistaken. Then, it occurs to me: How can I take out the music form this piece of old junk and put it on my PC as mp3 files? Well, the solution is here my friends. For all those ochentosos like myself, here are the steps, hardware and software that we need to bring those hits to the "new millennium" .
